In 1892, an early version of The Pledge of Allegiance, written by Francis Bellamy, appeared in The Youths Companion. It went: I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The Pledge of Allegiance was a sales gimmick to encourage public schools to purchase flags. #Flag Dad explained this to me while I was in grade school. Stupid me, I tried to explain it to my teacher. She wouldnt have any of it. |
